This painting is all about the interesting, subtle colour set in sharp relief by the dark figures manning the boats. A glory to paint!
It is from a photograph taken by Raymond Turley. Raymond was a physicist, and later an archivist, at Southampton University, who was also a keen photographer, working for Hampshire Magazine. In this role he gained access to the press boats in the Solent covering all the major regattas. He kindly allowed Martin the use of images he didn't use himself.
