Born in 1941, Alan lived in Dorset until his untimely death in 2007. He had drawn his inspirations from the many seaports and harbours along the south coast. He painted mainly in watercolour but he also occasionally worked with acrylic, oil and pastel. Although principally a marine artist his work did include landscape and architectural subjects. In 1979 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and exhibited in many of the Society's exhibitions in the UK and overseas. During 1979 he was also elected a member of the International Society of Marine Painters based in Florida. Exhibitions in the UK included many private galleries and Federation of British Artists exhibitions held at the Mall Galleries in London. He had also exhibited in the USA and Canada.
