Wilbur Heynes gained a BA ( Hons) Fine Art from London Guildhall. He also trained in portrait painting at Atelier Charles Cecil, Firenze and portrait sculpture at Oxford. He initially trained as a portrait sculptor, then a portrait painter. He believes that the pursuit of individuality through perception is rooted in the way we percieve and this provided the mainstay of research during his degree. Whilst he was working as an assistant to Hal Wilson his interest in steel grew and metal has since become his chosen medium. Steel provides a versatile medium to explore the mental organisation that translates seeing into understanding. The metal can adopt subtle shape yet retain the appearance of having been machined. The unique figures Wilbur creates are all constructed using an anatomical norm and are all finished to the same reflective state. This blank finish and conscious omission of specific titles invites the participation if each individual viewer. That precise interpretation will depend on the individual experience of each viewer, giving each figure its final shape and identity.
