Robert Bell was born in Cornwall and brought up in Australia. He has lived by the coast for most of his life, including a number of years at sea. The dynamic interaction of sea and land and the effects and moods of weather are perpetual source of inspiratrion and imagery. A breadth of expericence of this subject from many perspectives and direct engagement with it underlies and informs all of his work. Robert paints with a variety of media on paper and canvas, the picture surface is alternately built up and eroded to produce layers of texture, movement and light. Combinations of traditional and unorthodox techniques are used to create both a tactile and visual experience of a place over time.
