Lulworth chasing Britannia, reefed down in boisterous conditions, Cowes

In 1930, her last racing season, Lulworth was the most successful Big Class racer and the rivalry between her and Britannia was fierce. Just because of her sheer size and formidable performance she is a great subject for a painting.

Gaff rig was evolving towards Bermudan - there were no separate topmasts, just one towering pole . In this picture the boats are reefed in a stiff breeze and on Lulworth a topman can seen high up earning his extra wages way above the deck.

Pictorially, I see the gaff rig as more appealing than the triangular Bermudan rig that replaced it and just occasionally a viewpoint from behind can emphasise the huge wake thrown up by these huge yachts racing flat out in a choppy sea.
